Using the bypass valve located on top of your water softener shut off the incoming water to the softener and the brine tank.

Unscrew the bolts on either side of the salt tank.
Step 4 add a new bucket of clean warm water to the tank along with a generous amount of dish soap.

Once every few months pour water softener cleaner into the brine tank and set the system to regenerate to keep it clean.
Then rinse it out and soak the tank in cup household bleach and 2 gallons of water.
How to clean a water softener brine tank.
Shut off the water to the water softener.
About once a year empty your water tank and scrub it with soapy water.
Before you start cleaning make sure the salt levels are at the minimum level.
Dump the bleach water and rinse using a lot of clean water.
You may need to wait a few days for the salt levels to drop.

Put 5 gallons of clean water into the brine tank.
Bleach dosage to sanitize a water softener use 1 2 fluid ounces a bit over 2 tablespoons of bleach per cubic foot of resin in the resin tank.
For best results don t fill salt to the very top of the brine tank but leave six inches of space from the top rim of the tank.
